- 1963: Legendary singer Patsy Cline, who still influences both country and pop singers, died in a plane crash at the peak of her career.
- 1953: Joseph Stalin, who had exercised absolute authority in the USSR since Lenin's death in 1924, died at the age of 73, possibly as a result of poisoning. The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, one of the millions whom Stalin tormented, also died on this day.
