- 1993: A powerful explosion in an underground garage in New York City's World Trade Center collapsed walls and floors in the basement areas and destroyed the building's power-distribution system, forcing most of the 55,000 people working there to make their way down lightless stairways within the darkened towers; this World Trade Center bombing was the work of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, which returned to complete the destruction on September 11, 2001.
- 1991: During the Persian Gulf War, coalition ground forces expelled the Iraqi army from Kuwait.
- 1987: The Tower Commission, a review board appointed by President Ronald Reagan to investigate the Iran-contra affair, released its report, in which it criticized Reagan's "management style."
- 1972: Poor strip-mining practices and heavy rains caused the collapse of an impoundment dam on the Buffalo Creek in West Virginia; the flood, which killed 125 people and left 4,000 homeless, was documented in the film Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man (1975).
