Nissan GA engine
MyWikiBiz, Author Your Legacy — Thursday September 09, 2010
The GA engine is a 1.3 to 1.8 L straight-4 piston engine from Nissan. It has a cast iron block and an aluminum head. There are SOHC & DOHC versions, 12 valve & 16 valve versions, carburetted, single point injected, multi-point injected versions, and versions with variable valve timing (GA16DE). The GA is produced from August 1987 through 2007. But since 1998 it's only available from Mexico. In the code of the engine the two numbers indicate the capacity of the engine, D=DOHC, S=carburetor, E=injection.

The GA15DE is an 1.5 L (1497 cc) engine with DOHC and single point electronic fuel injection. Bore and stroke are 73.6 mm (Expression error: Unrecognised word "expression" in) and 88 mm (3.5 in). It produces 105 hp (78 kW) @6000 rpm and
@4000 rpm. It is used in the 1995 - 1998 B14 Nissan Sunny, 1995 - 2000 N15 Nissan Pulsar/Nissan Lucino, R11 Nissan Presea (JDM) and Y10 Nissan Wingroad/Nissan AD Wagon.
GA16S
The GA16S is a 1,6 L (1597 cc) SOHC engine with an electronicle carburetor. It produces 94 hp (without a catalyst).
It was used in the following:
Nissan Sunny N13
GA16E
The GA16E is a 1.6 L (1597 cc) multi point fuel injected SOHC engine. It produces 110 hp (82 kW).
GA16I
The GA16I is a 1.6 L (1597 cc) single point fuel injected engine produced from August 1987 through June 1990. It produces 90 hp (66 kW) It is a 12-valve design, and one version was built with hydraulic lifters. Japanese built 1989 and 1990 North American market Sentras received this hydraulic lifter version and produced 92 hp (69 kW) and 96 lb·ft (130 N·m) of torque.
Applications:
- 1989-1990 Nissan Sentra
- 1989-1990 Nissan Pulsar
GA16DE
The GA16DE is a 1.6 L (1597 cc) engine produced from November 1990 through 1999. All GA16DEs have 16 valves and DOHC heads. There are two versions, the NVCS (VTC), which produced 115 hp (85 kW) @6400 rpm and 110 ft·lbf (146 Nm) @4400 rpm and a non-NVCS version (European-spec) which made 102 hp (76 kW). Additionally 2 versions of the North American NVCS version exist. Earlier motors used pistons with 2 compression rings and 1 oil ring, while later GA16DE's have a single compression ring and a single oil ring. The GA16DE shares much of its block and rotating assembly with its predecessor the GA16I. Some engines have siamesed exhaust manifolds, while others keep the exhausts separated until the catalytic converter. Earlier ECUs contained the fuel & ignition maps on a discrete ROM IC, making retuning relatively easy, later ECUs buried the maps on a larger more integrated microcontroller's firmware, making retuning require the use of a daughterboard.
Applications:
- 1991-1994 Nissan NX 1600 N14
- 1991-1994 Nissan Sentra B13
- 1994-1995 Nissan 100NX B13 (UK)

EDIT: The SR16VE is the first Nissan engine with Variable Valve Timing.
GA16DS
The GA16DS is a 1.6 L (1597 cc) engine with a carburetor, 16 valves and DOHC heads. If it comes with a catalyst then is the carburetor electronically controlled. It produces between 89 hp (66 kW) and 95 hp. (Without catalyst 70kW, 95hp)
Applications:
- 1990-1993 Nissan Primera P10

GA16DNE
The GA16DNE is a Mexican 1.6 L (1597 cc) engine. It produces 105 hp (78 kW). The main differences between DE and DNE are: DNE has no VTC, comes without ECCS plenum. Additionally, DNE has a vertical throttle body with and MAF inside; the air filter is placed diagonally into a black plastic box. This variant also was released in some Southeast Asian models (Philippines and Malaysia Sentra B14)
The meaning of the "N" in its nomenclature is: N = New EGI (emission system) This engine DOES NOT have an EGR system like the GA16DE. Source: Factory Service Manual (FSM)
Since 2003, comes with a new ECU and 3 oxygen sensors.
