- 1999: Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to circumnavigate the world nonstop in a balloon.
- 1995: Sarin, a poison gas, was released into the Tokyo subway, killing 12 people and injuring more than 5,000; a Japanese religious cult called Aum Shinrikyo was found to be responsible for this attack.
- 1836: During the Texas Revolution the outnumbered Texans in the town of Goliad were forced to surrender to Mexican troops, only to be executed a week later in what was called the Goliad Massacre.
- 1819: In McCulloch v. Maryland the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that federal law takes precedence over state law.
- 1815: Having returned from exile on Elba, Napoleon I occupied Paris, beginning the period known as the Hundred Days (which ended with his final defeat in the Battle of Waterloo).
