April 19 in history:
- 2005: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope, taking the name Benedict XVI; he was the first German-born pope since the 11th century.
- 1995: A powerful bomb hidden in a rental truck exploded in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people (including 19 children) and wounding more than 500.
- 1993: Federal agents attempted to break down the walls of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, which had been under siege since February 28; tear gas was pumped into the buildings, which subsequently burst into flames; during the fire 76 cult members, including 17 children, died either from the fire or from gunshots fired by leader David Koresh and others.
- 1951: Douglas MacArthur resolutely defended his actions in Korea in a speech to Congress and ended famously with "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."
- 1943: Attempting to deport the remaining Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, some 2,000 German troops, supported by Lithuanian and Polish collaborators, attacked the ghetto and again met serious resistance.
- 1775: British troops from Boston met a company of local minutemen at Lexington, Massachusetts, triggering the official start of the American Revolution.
