Genesis 1:1-2:3
In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. The earth was shapeless and empty, and darkness covered the waters.
Then the Spirit of God passed over the waters, and God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. The light God called day. He called the darkness night. And so the first day of creation ended.
On the second day God said, "Let the waters divide," and the waters divided. Now the world had two parts, upper and lower, with sky between, The upper part God called heaven. And so the second day of creation ended.
On the third day God said, "Let all the waters under heaven come together, and let dry land appear." God called the dry land earth, and the waters he called seas.
Then God said, "Let the earth bloom with fruits and flowers, and let each plant have seeds to make new plants." And from the earth grew trees with fruits, and grasses and all kinds of vegetables. God looked at what he had made, and saw that it was good. And so the third day of creation ended.
On the fourth day God said, "Let there be lights in the sky to divide day from night, and to mark the changing seasons and the passing years." Then God made two great lights, the sun, to shine during the day, and the moon, to shine at night. These he set above the earth, among the stars and planets. God looked at what he had made, and saw that it was good. And so the fourth day of creation ended.
On the fifth day God said, "Let fish and birds fill the seas and sky." Then God created the great whales, and every creature that swims under water or flies in the air. God looked at what he had made, and saw that it was good. And he blessed all the creatures, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply." And so the fifth day of creation ended.
On the sixth day God said, "Let there be animals on the land." He made cattle, and wild beasts of every kind, and every creature that walks or creeps on the face of the earth. God looked at what he had made, and saw that it was good.
Then God said, "Now I will make a man and a woman, to rule of the fish in the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle and the wild beasts."
And God made man and woman in his image, after his own likeness. And he blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply. Be the masters of the earth, for I have given you food, and there is food for every creature on the earth." Then God looked at everything he had made, and saw that it was very good. And so the sixth day of creation ended.
This is how God made the world:
- Light from darkness on the first day,
- Heaven on the second day,
- The seas, the earth, and green plants on the third day,
- The sun, the moon, and the stars on the fourth day,
- Fish and birds on the fifth day,
- Man and woman and animals on the sixth day.
- On the seventh day God finished his work.
- And God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, for on that day he rested.
